NTIC kidnap: There’re 38 rifles in our camp, says suspect

by
One of the suspects involved in the kidnap of pupils and officials of the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges has allegedly confessed to the police that his gang has several camps in creeks in Ogun and Lagos states.

The police said the suspect, 21-year-old Alex Supper, aka Yanga, also disclosed that there were 38 Ak-47 rifles in a camp in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Supper was arrested on Monday along with one Egbasimokumo Ayeomi, while N3m, believed to be part of the ransom paid by parents and the school management, was recovered from them.

Their apprehension brought the number of suspects nabbed by the police in connection with the kidnap to six.

Philip Kakadu aka General Kakadu; Romeo Council aka Raw; Bekewei Agbojule, aka Prince Yellow, Totki Okoda; and a nurse, Felicia Weinoh, who reportedly took care of kidnap victims, had been arrested by the police.

It had been reported  that some gunmen stormed the school’s premises on Friday, January 13 and abducted eight persons.

The victims, were, however, freed 11 days after, following the payment of ransom.

Our correspondent learnt on Tuesday that Supper and Ayeomi were arrested by the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, led by ACP Abba Kyari.

A security operative said the suspects were picked up while coming out of the creeks in Majidun, Ikorodu, with some bags.

“When the bags were searched, N3m was found there and they confessed to taking part in the kidnapping,” the officer added.

He said the suspects also confessed that his gang was responsible for the killing of a television presenter, Aisha Alli-Balogun, in December on Ikorodu Road.

Supper, who hails from Arogbo town in Ondo State, told detectives that he was invited to the kidnap gang by a friend called Austen.

He said, “I worked with Stone who is a commander of the camp and he works under Ossy, our overall boss. We have 38 rifles in our camp in Ajegunle, Ikorodu.

“My first operation was in Majidun, Ikorodu, and we were seven who went for the operation. Our gang leader, American, was the one who killed the woman (Alli-Balogun) that day.  He told us after the operation that he dropped the woman, who was with a man and two children, but the man ran out of the car with one of the children. The woman wanted to speed off when he shot her and abducted her daughter. We kidnapped six persons, including the woman’s two year-old daughter and a ransom of N2m was paid before their release.

“A few weeks ago, one of the leaders in our camp, Julius, brought the job of the kidnapping of the Turkish schoolgirls and staff members. We didn’t beat them while we negotiated with their relatives because one of the students and the white woman among them assured us that the money we demanded would be paid. When the ransom was paid, I got N2m.”

The other suspect, Ayeomi, said his roles were to monitor the camp and cook for the gang.

“I am a wood logger and was invited to join this camp by my friends. They told me that they were expecting big money. My job was to cook for the kidnappers and their victims. I also got N2m,” he added.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Moshood Jimoh, had yet to reply to a text message sent to his phone.

Thai Woman Tricked Into Carrying Drugs By Nigerian BF Sentenced To Life In Jail

by

A Cambodia court has sentenced a 22-year-old Thai woman to life imprisonment for trafficking 2.5 kilogrammes of cocaine from the United Arab Emirates.

Amphawan Kaewkanlaya claimed she was tricked into carrying the drugs by her Nigerian boyfriend's older brother. She was also fined 60 million riel (about 535,000 baht).

Police found packages of cocaine, totaling 2.5kg, hidden in boxes of Lindt chocolates in her luggage.

"The court has decided to give her a life sentence and a fine of 60 million riel to be put in the national budget," Phnom Penh Municipal Court presiding judge Heng Kessaror said in passing judgement on Thursday, January 5th.

"The court orders the confiscation of the drugs seized and other drug-related material to be destroyed," he added.

Amphawan said she would appeal the judgement and maintained she was innocent. During her trial last month she said she was unaware the package she accepted from her boyfriend’s brother, the boxes of Swiss chocolates, during her visit to the UAE contained drugs.

"It is so unjust for me. I will consider my appeal of the judgment to the Appeal Court,"she said.
During her trial last month, Amphawan said she traveled from Thailand to Dubai in March to visit her Nigerian boyfriend, Uche, and his family there.

Her boyfriend had paid for her airline tickets, visa, food and accommodation, she said. Before returning home last month, she was given the boxes of Lindt chocolates by Uche’s older brother, whose name she could not recall. He had asked her to take the chocolates to a friend of his in Cambodia.

She said she became aware the hidden drugs only when she was detained at Phnom Penh International Airport and police inspected the boxes.

Police seized 2,594 grammes of cocaine and charged her with transporting an illicit drug, possession and trafficking.

UK Deports 83 Nigerians

by
No fewer than 83 Nigerians are expected to arrive in the country on Wednesday (today) following their deportation from the United Kingdom.

The PUNCH gathered that among those to be deported were residents whose documents had expired and prisoners whose terms of imprisonment were nearing completion.

The spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, South-West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the deportees were expected to be in the country at 5am.

He explained that they would arrive through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, adding that officials of the agency and other government workers were expected to receive them.

Farinloye said the prisoners would complete their jail terms in Nigeria.

He said, “We were informed that 83 Nigerians would be deported from the United Kingdom on Wednesday morning. Some of the people affected are those who haven’t completed their prison sentences. They would be taken to Nigerian prisons to complete their terms. Although we cannot tell the various offences, we believe others could be drug-related and immigration problems.

“We expect that when they arrive in the country, we would be able to know the real reason for their deportation. The aircraft is expected to arrive in the country at 5am at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.”

Why multi-SIM ownership is increasing in Nigeria

by
NCC plans stiffer sanctions on operators

The need to stay connected at different locations in Nigeria has been identified as one of the major reasons multi-SIM ownership appears to be on the increase in the country, which currently has 154 million active subscribers.

A report by the Global System for Mobile Telecommunications Association (GSMA), made available to The Guardian, which established this fact, after a survey, linked this to increasing poor quality of service (QoS) from the various networks in the country.

Indeed, while the number of subscribers seems to be heading towards the roof, the gap in infrastructure roll outs, amidst other challenges is over-stretching the various network capacities, which makes congestion and subsequent drop calls, undelivered SMS become inevitable.

GSMA observed that in developing countries more than a third of multiSIM users claimed they switch between different operators to make use of the best call quality in certain locations, due to the variable network quality in their region.

According to GSMA, in Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Tanzania more than half of multiSIM users said that network quality was a key reason why they use multiple subscriber identity module (SIMs).

The body, which represents the interest of over 800 mobile operators across the globe, discovered that price sensitivity also remained a strong factor in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, DRC, Tanzania and other developing economies, where up to a third of multiSIM users said they regularly buy new SIM cards to take advantage of discounts and promotions.

The report disclosed that globally, the average number of SIM cards owned per mobile subscriber declined to 1.44 in 2016, from a high of 1.50 in 2012. The GSMA Intelligence Consumer Survey 2016, showed that variable network quality is the second biggest driver of multiSIM ownership, after separate SIMs for personal and business use.

It pointed out that the higher the perceived network quality in a country, the less likely consumers are to own dualSIM handsets and switch between different operators for better network coverage.

“In developing markets in particular, coverage and network quality remain key levers in operators’ customer retention strategies and competitive positioning,” said Francesco Rizzato, the author of the report.

Meanwhile, at the weekend in Oye Ekiti, during a Consumer Town Hall meeting, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) again read the riot act to operators including MTN, Globacom, Airtel, Etisalat over the abysmal fall in QoS, warning of possible sanctions if they failed to improve their services.

NCC Director in charge of Consumer Affairs Bureau, Alhaji Abdullahi Maikano, said: “The event was an initiative of NCC to bring telecom consumers in the urban areas together with network operators and regulator to discuss and proffer solutions to consumer related issues.

“We have to protect consumers from market exploitation and empower them to make rational and informed decision when making their choice of services.

“We hereby directed that service providers must always communicate with our consumers in plain language and such must be relevant, timely and accurate. They should also ensure that access to information is made possible at all times.”

Commenting on the state of telecoms services, a source at MTN, said the telecommunications firm is rolling out more Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and optimising them for 4G and improving the 3G infrastructure to be able to meet subscribers demands.

The source, who said services may not get to the peak until existing challenges including RoW, multiple taxations, and vandalism, among others are overcome, informed that the telecommunications firm is rolling out more metropolitan fibre infrastructure to boost services across Nigeria.

Speaking on the growing multiSIM development, the President, National Association of Telecoms Subscribers of Nigeria (NATCOMS), Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, in a telephone interview with The Guardian, observed that some network operators are strong in some region, stressing that Globacom is very strong in the South West, while MTN and Airtel are stronger in South East, while in the North, Etisalat is trying. He pointed out that the insurgency and other damages to telecom infrastructure is another issue that must be considered for the multiplicity of SIM cards.

Ogunbanjo said multiSIMs will increase because people must communicate, “however, I see many people with three SIMs will drop one and maintain just two because of the recession.”

According to the GSMA report, poor network quality at a particular location is also critical, with the report claiming that half of the surveyed mobile subscribers living in developing countries own a dualSIM handset. It disclosed that Cameroon, Sierra Leone and Nigeria have the highest ownership rates, with more than two thirds of respondents possessing a phone with two SIM slots.

“Our survey showed a strong correlation between ownership of dualSIM handsets, ownership of multiple SIM cards for coverage reasons, and a higher average number of SIMs per subscriber.”

The report observed that consumers are more likely to own multiple SIMs from different operators and use dualSIM handsets in those markets where network quality is perceived as poor and few if any operators provide nationwide coverage.

Rizzato claimed that survey results such as these highlight that in developing markets in particular, extending coverage and reducing variability in network quality can help operators boost customer retention and strengthen their competitive position.

Osinbajo: Soon Most Nigerians will Not Need Power from National Grid

by
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo monday said most Nigerian homes and offices would soon no longer require electricity from the national grid.

Osinbajo said the growing favourable economics of using renewable energy sources like solar photovoltaics (PV) to generate electricity means that Nigeria will now have to use off grid renewable energy solutions to close the wide deficit in stable electricity supply to its citizens, especially for those in the rural areas.

Speaking in Wuna community on the outskirts of Abuja when he kicked off the presidential initiative on solar homes systems, the acting president explained that Nigeria would leverage on the falling costs of deploying solar PV to move a good number of her citizens away from depending on the national grid.

The pay-as-you-go solar initiative launched by Osinbajo would be funded and implemented by the Niger Delta Power Holdings Plc (NDPHC) in partnership with Azuri Technologies.

Osinbajo also stated that the national grid was just a single transmission system and that every Nigerian cannot be connected to it, but can reliably get electricity from off grid sources.

“We think that as solar power becomes cheaper, and it is becoming cheaper practically day by day, we will be able to afford to do even more and deploying more across the country especially to places that are not served by the grid.

“The grid is just one transmission centre if you like, but we cannot take all our power from the grid. And so in the next few years, it will not be absolutely important for you be connected to the grid because we will be deploying every types of off grid solutions that we can deploy and we want to do that in the industrial areas,” Osinbajo said.

He said on the need for Nigeria to pivot to off grid solar power, “There is absolutely no reason why our country that has possibly the best radiation anywhere in the world should not embrace solar – many parts of Nigeria especially in the northern parts, radiation is excellent, and so we are going to do our best to use solar power to the maximum especially wherever we can find the best radiation.”

He noted that the initiative would target to provide 20,000 homes with solar power systems, and that the government was talking with private operators to partner it in expounding its reach.

“We expect that this will be replicated all over Nigeria, we are starting with 20,000 but I am sure we will ramp up very quickly. We have been talking to the private sector about involving themselves also on this project,” Osinbajo noted.

The Managing Director of NDPHC, Mr. Chiedu Ugbo, stated in his remarks that the initiative was part of the firm’s mandate to reduce the country’s electricity supply deficit.
Ugbo explained that 200 homes in Wuna would benefit from the scheme, and would eventually own it after some periods of monthly repayments.

“There are many Nigerians (estimated at 70 million) without any connection to the grid who still rely on rudimentary lighting systems characterised mainly by use of kerosene lamps, candles and petrol generators with attendant health and safety risks and indeed financial challenges,” he noted.

According to him:, “By the Solar-Home-System initiative being launched by the vice-president today, (yesterday), NDPHC will be actively involved in the process of bringing power to these rural communities, thereby stimulating social and economic activities in the rural communities located off the grid.”

“Under the first phase of the programme, NDPHC will deploy about 20,000 units of solar home systems to the underserved rural communities with no access to grid electricity supply. NDPHC has deployed 200 units of the SHS as pilot programme here in Wuna. The beneficiaries of the 20,000 units are among the already identified communities of the 19 northern states of the federation. The units will be deployed within a period of 12 months.

“NDPHC adopted a community-based approach that will allow the rural low-income dwellers an opportunity to participate in this project. This approach allows a monthly payment for energy and also acquisition of the SHS unit after a certain period of time.”

James Ibori to Return Home Soon

by
The former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, who was recently released from a British jail after serving his sentence for corruption and money laundering, will be returning home soon after a seven-year absence from Nigeria.

However, Ibori who is still facing assets forfeiture charges in the United Kingdom secured victory at a London court yesterday, when the judge trying his case rejected the request by the British Home Office to get his case transferred to another court.

Ibori, in a statement by his media assistant, Mr. Tony Eluemunor, said the British government had attempted to withdraw the case from Court 5, before Mr. Justice Garnham to either the Queen’s Bench Division or the Crown Court.
But Ibori’s lawyers argued that this was a delay tactic by the Crown. Based on the argument, the judge refused to grant the transfer, insisting that the case will remain in his Royal Court of Justice.

The case before the court was to determine the amount of money Britain will pay Ibori as compensation for the illegal detention he was subjected to when the British Prisons did not allow him to leave on the exact day his prison sentence ended in December last year, but detained him unlawfully and illegally by a day while even seeking for ways to further deny him his freedom.

Later in March, the two sides in the matter will make their final statements and the amount of damages to be awarded to Ibori would be decided.

Ibori, in the statement, also confirmed that he would be homeward bound very soon.
Speaking outside the court tuesday, he told the BBC that he was planning to appeal his conviction and return to Nigeria.

When asked how soon his trip home would be, he said: “As soon as possible, may be in a matter of days.”
Ibori was mobbed by a large number of Nigerians who came to identify with him in his travails. He shook hands with many of them, exchanging pleasantries.

“Dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s in briefing his lawyers may be the only thing standing between Ibori now and his journey to Nigeria,” the statement added.

For instance, there will be mention of the Ibori London case on Friday at the Southwark London Court for the Judge to be fully informed on what is happening with the disclosure process and to ascertain if everybody convicted in the Ibori and related cases will be appealing.

Buhari & APC spent between $1.5 Bn and $2 Bn on 2015 Election – INEC

by
                                                              Prof. Attahiru Jega

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that the 2015 general elections will stand as the costliest election to be conducted in Nigeria.

INEC said on Tuesday that the commission under its former chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, committed over $547 million (N107.759 billion at the exchange rate of N197/$) as core cost of the elections.

The commission also revealed that political parties and their candidates spent between $1.5 billion and $2 billion.

This revelation was made by the Chief Technical as frowned at what it described as an Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Bolade Eyinla, at the opening of a two-day learning conference on the Regional Cost of Politics, organized by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy in Abuja.

The INEC chairman’s aide, who argued that Nigerian politicians spend over $35 million to win election, regretted that while the electoral body and the Nigerian political parties commit more money in elections, the conduct of similar elections have continued to reduce in other West African countries such as Ghana and Benin Republic

He said: “In the last general elections in Benin Republic, the core cost was $15 million, but here, you had a candidate who, alone spent about $32 million.

“In Nigeria, our core cost was $547 million in the 2015 elections. It is perhaps the most expensive election that we have ever seen. I have seen figures somewhere of between $1.5 billion to $2 billion and believe me, it is true, if we really knew what happened. In one scandal, we heard of $115 million,” he said.

Eyinla also disclosed that 75 political associations have applied to INEC for registration as political parties, even as he noted that the existing laws do not give the commission the latitude to restrict the political space to fewer parties.

In her remarks, INEC National Commissioner, Prof. Anthonia Simbine, noted that “the level of money in politics is responsible for the kind of governance we have at any given time. If you make an investment, you would want to reap from that.”

On party financing, she said that the existing limits in the legal framework had become very unrealistic, because there are no enforcement framework or capacity. “This is more because our society is cash-based and so the capacity of INEC is still very weak in tracking and monitoring party financing,” Simbine said.

The Country Representative of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Mr. Adebowale Olorunmola, said that the cost of election in Nigeria in 2015 was higher than that of 2011.

“In 2011, all the opposition parties put together, spent N2.04 billion in traceable expenditure while the then ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) spent N5.01 billion. In 2015, all the opposition parties spent N2.91 billion while the PDP spent N8.74 billion,” he said.

Earlier, the Regional Director, Africa and Europe of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Mr. George Kunnath, urged countries in the region to examine the overall cost of politics, saying it has negative implications for the independence and performance of legislators.

Ruggedman Blasts Blackface For Condemning 2face-led Anti-govt Protest January 31

by

As controversy continues to trail the plan by Innocent Idibia, 2Face, to lead an anti-government nationwide protest, rapper, Ruggedman, has attacked Blackface for condemning the plan.

2Face’s former band mate in the defunct “Plantashun Boys” crew, Blackface, had earlier shared a post by a Lagos-based lawyer and rights activists, Bunmi Awoyemi, on social media condemning the proposed protest.

The post which was titled “Lets Educate the illiterate as he leads the protest”, read: “I read Tuface Idibia’s verbal tirade in Vanguard in which he said he will be leading a protest against Buhari on the 5th of February for among other things not paying salaries of civil servants.

“I think he needs to be educated about the efforts of the Buhari administration…”
In conclusion, the post said “We your fans want to assure you that if you go ahead with this protest we will reevaluate our support for you and it may be downhill for you afterwards. Rethink your actions and reflect deeply.”

Ruggedman has however expressed disappointment on the move by Blackface who used to be a close friend to 2Face to share the post.

He wrote this: “BLACKFACE FACE WHAT’S REAL @blackfacenaija you be my guy and @official2baba na my guy but I will tell you that this your move right here is very disappointing. You sang hardlife and all when things were even a bit bearable, but now that things are really messed up you have kept quiet. But here you are mouthing off over a 2Face move? Guy you fall my hand. Talking about educating people.

“First of all, it is not a protest being led by 2face. He said he saw the post and thought to lend his voice to it. Something a few other artists and people have done.

“So, you knew about all the governors embezzling funds and yet you said nothing. But you are quick to shout now because 2face name has come out on something. But you make it too obvious you have something against 2face and you should have let all this go by now. NIGERIANS are suffering and you are just monitoring 2face.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, has said the command was aware of a proposed demonstration by 2face.
Mr. Owoseni said this on Monday while addressing journalists in Lagos.

In his address on the protest, the police chief said although his command was yet to be officially notified, he assured that the police would not allow unscrupulous elements to hijack the protest.

2face, the African Queen crooner, recently took to his Instagram handle, @official2baba, calling on his fans and followers to join in the nationwide protest scheduled for February 5

No Going back On Enforcement Of Speed Limiting Device -FRSC

by
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it is set for full enforcement of the installation of speed limiting device in commercial vehicles scheduled to begin nationwide on Wednesday.

Mr Bisi Kazeem, Spokesman of the FRSC said this while addressing the press on Tuesday in Abuja. He said that sector and field commands of the agency had been fully mobilised for the exercise.

Kazeem said that the army, police, civil defence, Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies were on standby to provide security support.

He stated that mobile courts had been set up nationwide for the purpose, adding that defaulters could pay up to N3,000 as penalty depending on the discretion of the courts.

READ: FRSC Denies Claims Of Officers Bearing Arms

“To facilitate enforcement, a portal of speed limiting device (SLD) was created and is operational and a short code to confirm the installation of SLD is active.

“A standard operating procedure (SOP) has been dispatched with a directive that copies of those SOP be shared to security agencies within the commands’ areas of jurisdiction.

“A template for daily report has also be designed and forwarded to commands, while booking sheets with Failure to Install Speed Limiting Device (FSLD) have been distributed to field commands,’’ he said.

For effectiveness, the spokesman added that sector commanders had been instructed to carry out joint patrols with unit commands in the whole of February.

According to him, commands are expected to hold mobile court sittings from the onset, and where mobile courts are likely to slow down enforcement they can proceed without them.

“We have created a situation room to monitor and collate report on daily basis and test-run for the clampdown.

“Sector commands are fully prepared and have made arrangements for security backups and joint patrols with the police, civil defence, army and other security agencies,’’ he said.

The enforcement of the SLD installation had been postponed three times by the FRSC last year following appeal by stakeholders.

Kazeem said that the high rate of involvement of commercial vehicles in road traffic crashes across the country informed the need to begin the enforcement with them, adding that there was no going back on the policy.

Citing FRSC statistics, he said that commercial vehicles accounted for over 50 per cent of the total number of vehicles involved in road crashes in the country.

Teenager tortured to death over false allegation

by

For six hours, 19-year-old Rilwanu Akintunde was beaten, handcuffed and locked inside a teargased room for allegedly stealing N90,000.

His torturers were his mother, Mrs. Akintunde, her brother Kayode and a policeman identified as Titus.

Rilwanu alias Rado denied collecting the money said to belong to his mother, a hawker, but his attackers didn’t believe him. Unable to bear the torture, the teenager passed out and was rushed to Richland Hospital, Arepo, where he was confirmed dead on Sunday evening.

His torturers secretly buried him at his mother’s site at Sotel, not knowing that their action would draw the wrath of the residents of Oriola Street, Ibafo and environs.

The youths in the area went berserk after discovering that the money, for which Rilwanu was tortured to death, was later found in his mother’s closet.

Wielding cutlasses, bottles sticks and fire, the mob, it was gathered stormed Kayode’s residence; chased all the tenants away and vandalized his properties.

Inscriptions such as “Rado was a good son born by a stupid mother” were seen on the walls of the building whose roofs, doors and windows have been destroyed.

When The Nation visited the Ogun communityTuesday, residents were clamouring for jungle justice to all the culprits.

It was gathered that Kayode and his police friend Titus have since fled the neighbourhood, while the deceased’s mother and Kayode’s wife were arrested by policemen from Ibafo Division, who visited the place Tuesday.

According to residents, Rilwanu’s killers might have had another motive for their action because the teenager was neither a thief nor troublesome.

His friends, it was gathered produced an obituary for him, which they pasted not far from the community mosque.

The deceased’s wife, Damilola Owoigbe, who had their eight-month-old son on her arms, demanded justice against his killers.

She said: “I want all those responsible for my husband’s death to be arrested and jailed for life. They killed him for nothing. Rado was never a thief. Everyone in Ibafo love him. He was a peaceful person. He was an apprentice at a tailoring shop because he wanted to make life better for us and for his two siblings.

“Their father is dead. Their mother sells bottled water in traffic.  She was the one who went and told her brother on Sunday morning that Rilwanu stole her N90, 000. Then, her brother, Kayode sent his wife to call his police friend, Titus and they all tortured him to death.

“I was not there. I was in my mother’s house. But I was told that the policeman brought handcuffs and teargas, which they used on him. I was also told that blood was all over his body. Now, I am confused because I don’t know who would take care of our son.”

A source who refused to be named told The Nation that the said policeman works at Area G Command, Ogba, Lagos.

Contacted, the Ogun command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident, but said he was unaware if Titus was a policeman.

He said: “The information I got is that the woman, the boy’s stepfather and his friend tortured him to death. They said the woman complained that her N90,000 was missing and she accused her son. Then, she told the boy’s stepfather, who sent his wife to contact a friend of his. They all tortured the boy to death and secretly buried him. The woman later saw the money

“At the moment, the two men involved are on the run but the women have been arrested. They have been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). The Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered that the fleeing suspects be arrested.

“I am not aware that one of them is a policeman. But be assured that they will be fished out and dealt in accordance with the law.”

Borno allocates 5000 hectares of land for army varsity

by
The Borno State government has allocated 5000 hectares of land for the setting up of the Nigerian Army University of Science, Technology and Innovation (NAUSTI).

The University is to be located in Biu, headquarters of Biu Bocal Government Area of the state.

Governor Kashim Shettima announced the allocation in a goodwill message he delivered at the 12th matriculation ceremony of the Nigerian Army Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies (NAITES), in Biu, yesterday.

The governor expressed gratitude that the relocation of NAITES from its temporary site in Markudi, Benue State to Biu had provided more military presence in the area, which he said would further strengthen security in the area.

“Bearing in mind the security situation in Borno State where people are leaving the state for their safety, that is when the Nigerian Army is relocating some of her institutions to the state.

“This has demonstrated the resilience and determination of the Nigerian Army to restore complete normalcy in Borno State”, Governor Shettima said.

Represented at the occasion by the Commissioner for Inter Governmental Relations, Alhaji Ali Abacha, the governor while pledging the support and cooperation of the people of the state to ensure that NAITES was fully established in Biu, pointed out that recently a committee on NAUSTI from the Army Headquarters informed him of modalities being worked out to transform NAITES to a university hence the allocation of the land.

In an opening remark, rector of the NAITES, Major-General C.O. Ojo said the institution was established in 2005 with the objective of providing National Diploma programmes/certificate courses in basic technology and science related fields.

We planed to quit robbery, but we were caught – 19 Year old Gang leader

by
19-year-old leader of a four -man -armed robbery gang, Ahmed Akinade, has disclosed that they had concluded plans to quit armed robbery because of the high risk involved before they were suddenly arrested.

Akinade and two of his gang members were recently arrested by the police.
He, however, lamented that their late boss who recruited them into the armed robbery business told them that robbery was one of the easiest way to get rich, which he later discovered that it was not so.

‘’I was a driver at Badagry road and Taiwo (a member of the gang) was my conductor. I initially learnt carpentry at Osogbo but when I came to Lagos there was no carpentry work, I therefore started as a conductor before I learnt driving while Taiwo was a mechanic who helped me repair my bus.

“We later became friends. One day I met my late boss who was my senior at the place I learnt carpentry work and he introduced me to robbery,” he said.
The armed robbery gang leader who regretted his involvement in the deadly act, said that he was further deceived by the riches his former boss had acquired.

“Indeed he was rich with a fine jeep and a house at Agbara, Ogun side of Lagos. I was happy that he had offered to help me. He asked me to bring another person and I quickly called Taiwo. We started and the first day was interesting as I was given N25,000 cash.

Unfortunately, the man later died in a robbery operation and I took over the headship since I was the one who brought other members of the gang into the business.
“ We later changed to picking pocket because nobody was bringing job for us and we did not have guns. We resorted to the using cutlass,’’ he explained.

FG Vows Action against Destroyers of 190-year-old Brazilian Building in Lagos

by
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has promised that the federal government will not let the persons who pulled down a historic structure built by returnee slaves from Brazil to go scot-free.

Muhammed made the vow in a statement issued monday after inspecting the cite of the 190-year-old structure in Lagos at the weekend.

The Brazilian themed edifice was gazetted as a national monument in 1956.
Government has already instituted legal actions against the developers over the property.
Muhammad vowed that government would not tolerate the destruction of national monuments anywhere in the country for whatever reason.

‘’Because they wanted to develop this place, they have broken so many laws. Fortunately, this is a country of laws and we are ready to meet them in court and one thing I can assure you is that nobody can benefit from his own crime.

‘’I want to assure you that we will challenge them in court and we are going to get our reliefs and we will restore this building to its formal glory. We have the picture, we will rebuild it,’’ he said.
He lamented that the monument was symbolic as it chronicled the historical, cultural and social relationship between Nigeria and Brazil.

‘’It is like a living monument of our (slave trade) past. It was a monument that exhibited the Brazilian architecture at that time, which is rare to come by anywhere in the world. It is a remembrance of what our ancestors went through in slavery and how they triumphed, came back and showed that they were well-to-do. The important thing is that a people without history will perish very fast. This building was worth billions of dollars because it symbolised our past.

‘’No amount of skyscrapers can replace this history and all important monument that has been demolished, and I want to assure you that nobody can profit from his crime. You cannot go to court now and say that because the structure has been destroyed, the land should go back to the owner.

‘’This is why I have come here with the (Lagos State) Commissioner of Police, who has been quite helpful. I want to assure Nigerians that we are going to pursue whoever has destroyed this place. It may take time, but the hand of the law is long and the wheel of justice grinds
slowly but surely,’’ he said.

Customs intercept 661 pump-action rifles imported through Lagos port

by

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted 661 pieces of pump-action rifles from China, concealed with steel doors and other merchandise goods, which came in through Lagos port.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Retired Col. Hameed Ali, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on Monday in Lagos.

Ali said that the Federal Operations Unit, while on patrol, intercepted a Mark truck with registration number BUG 265 XG conveying a 40ft container with number; PONU/825914/3 along Mile 2 Apapa Road, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports  that the consignment was cleared from Lagos port.

The comptroller-general said the truck was immediately taken to F.O.U. premises for physical examination and 49 boxes containing 661 pieces of pump action rifles concealed with steel doors were revealed.

Ali said the rifles were under absolute prohibition, adding that its importation was illegal.

“Such deadly contravention of the law is even more unacceptable considering the fragile security situation in some parts of the country.
“Already three suspects have been arrested in connection with this illegal importation,’’ NAN quotes the comptroller-general as saying.

The suspects are: Mr Oscan Okafor (an importer), Mr Mahmud Haruna (a clearing agent), Mr Sadique Mustapha (accompanying the consignment to its destination).

Ali said initially the consignment was said to have originated from Turkey, adding that there was mixed-up in the document which finally revealed that the consignment originated from China.

“Investigation has already commenced and I have directed that the drag net should be wide enough to fish out all persons involved in the importation and  clearing of the consignment, ‘’ NAN quotes Ali as saying.

He said Customs officers who were involved in the clearance of the containers were in the custody of Comptroller Mahmud Haruna of FOU Zone “A’’

Ali said that the seizure underscored the determination of the service to enforce all laws relating to importation and exportation of goods into and out the country thereby contributing to the economy, security and well-being of the country.

The comptroller-general said that the seizure was commendable and represented the new normal rule in the service “where most officers and men are on a daily basis ensuring that illegalities are not allowed unchecked’’.

He commended the Comptroller in charge of F.O.U. and officers and men who were involved in the seizure.

Ali, however, urged the media as well as meaningful Nigerians to help the service with information that would assist the service perform its statutory responsibilities in the interest of Nigeria.

He said the seizure would be handed over to the appropriate authority.
